How are the mighty fallen... having lost only four games in our previous six matches we now lose three in one night.
We knew promotion was certain but it would have been nice to go up as Champions.
And a 100+ mile round trip too.
HORSHAM E v HASTINGS & ST LEONARDS D
D Britton (123) v Mason WOODHAMS (138) 1-0
T Hewitt (-) v Jeremy HUDSON (135) ½-½
L Bennet-Stevens (122) v Paul BUSWELL (122) ½-½
R Barrowclough (112) v Con POWER (115) 1-0
R Fletcher (106) v Gregory CHANDLER (83) 1-0
Result 4 - 1
Jeremy finished relatively early after his gruelling drive, a game in
which neither really progressed and the opponent offered. ½-½
Con had a disaster. He offered a draw in what was afterwards recognised
as a drawn position but after it was declined, one move later, Con found the
one and only move that lost absolutely immediately. I will spare his
blushes. ½-1½
Gregory in his usual cavalier fashion had shed a couple of pawns, but the
opponent simplified all the way down to R+P and although Gregory thrashed
about a lot he was eventually landed. ½-2½
When I saw Mason an early piece down but attacking I thought it was just a
Woodhams sacrificial hack but was told later it was a straight blunder.
Lots of tactics on the board, Mason knew he had to chance his arm to save
the match, but not enough.. ½-3½
My opponent is the Southern Counties U11 Girls Champion who, although
sound, was maybe not streetwise with my 50+ years of hacking and I won a pawn.
Unfortunately I oversimplified, thinking it would play itself, and messed
up the R+P ending. I offered the P back to mix it - it was win or nothing
- but she sat tight and I had nothing, and the moment Mason went down we
shook hands on the draw . 1-4
