FIFTH ANNUAL MEETING
The annual meeting of the Hastings and St. Leonards Chess Club was held at the headquarters at the Seaside and Pier Hotel on Friday evening. Mr T. H. Cole presided, and amongst those present were Mr V. B. Crake (president), Mr and Mrs Ridpath, Messrs. F. W. Womsersley, Muller, E. Dobell, Dobell, jun., C. Dawson, H. Colborne, &c.
In the absence of Mr Parkinson, Mr H. Colborne officiated as secretary and read the minutes of the previous meeting which were formally confirmed.
The report, presented by the committee, stated that the number of members had increased during the year and that the finances were in a satisfactory condition. Although not much outside play had been engaged in there had been handicap and other tournaments played with much pleasure by nearly all the members. The first contest for the year was between the club and non-members of the town and district, resulting in the club being victorious by 10.5 games to 6.5. After the even tournament on December 18th, a match between the club members in which sides were chosen by Messrs. Womersley and Jones, the past and present captains, resulting in an enjoyable evening for all engaged. The handicap tournament , which ended in April, resulted in Mr H. E. Dobell winning first prize , Mr Cunningham second, and Mr Womersley third. A match was arranged versus Brighton, but in consequence of other engagements, only a few members could take part. After a pleasant contest the match resulted in favour of the Brighton players by nine to four. Several members had taken part in the inter-county matches with surrey with fair success, Surrey winning one and Sussex the other; and also with the correspondence matches Sussex v. Ireland, and Sussex v. Yorkshire. In both cases the Hastings representatives scored a majority of their games, although Ireland won the match by the odd game, the Yorkshire match is not completed but is in favour of Sussex probably. The receipts for the year £16 1s., leaving a surplus of £ 15s. 9.5d.
After the report had been adopted , the election of officers was proceeded with.
Mr Cole moved the re-election of Mr V. B. Crake as president for the ensuing year.
Mr Dobell seconded.- carried.
Mr Crake, in acknowledging his re-election , made some observations on the success which the club attained. Without the possession of such a Chess Club he thought the town would be very deficient. The proceedings of the club had been characterised by harmony and success and he considered the town ought to feel grateful to them. referring to the results of some of the tournaments, Mr Crake congratulated the players and wished them increased success in the future. He looked upon chess as a most healthy exercise for the brain and necessary to maintenance of health as bodily exercise. He was much obliged to the members for the honour they had paid him in re-electing him as their president.
Mr Dobell expressed regret that Captain Lousada, who had been an energetic and valuable member was leaving town. He had been a warm supporter of the club and a hearty friend to all the members. (Hear, hear.)
He then moved the re-election of Messrs. T. H. Cole and Ridpath as vice-presidents together with Mr Henry Colborne, in succession to Captain Lousada.
Mr Dobell, jun., seconded.- carried.
The next business was the appointment of the treasurer, and the choice again feel on Mr E. Dobell.
Mr Dobell, in returning thanks , expressed his satisfaction that during the past year they had not only been able to pay their way , but to getrid of their previous year's debt, and pointed out that members could further strengthen the club by endeavouring to obtain new members.
Other appointments were made as follows:-
Hin. Secretary - Mr Parkinson.
Committee - Mesrs. Gaitskill, J. G. Colborne, F. W. Womersley, Cunningham, H. E. Cheshire, and Jones.
A vote of thanks to the President and Chairman closed the meeting
