HSL 3 played a home match against East Grinstead 1
16 January 2013.
We were defeated 1.5/3.5. We won the toss and batted first on odd boards.
1 Ollie Willson (151) v Nick Burton (180) 1/2 - 1/2
2 Jonathan Finn (RP 130) v Ian Dennis (155) 0 - 1
3 Derek Cosens (126) v Adrian Waldock (143) 1/2 - 1/2
4 Thomas Finn (RP 116) v Robert Fisher (142) 0 - 1
5 Gary Willson (114) v John Scholey (125) 1/2 - 1/2
We had thought that they would not put out their strongest team: however, we significantly outpipped on all boards. Using our two new members's rapid play grades (their higher ones and the basis of the board order), we averaged 127 against 149 for our visitors, so perhaps the result was not so surprising.
Ollie had tight English game that had chances but dangers at the end for both sides when his opponent offered the draw. At around the same time Thomas had just been mated after being on the wrong end of a tough one, a tough baptism for his first match for the club.
Jonathan had a close game but went the exchange down, and his experienced opponent just kept increasing the pressure. He did keep fighting though trying to hang on but to no avail.
I had a close game which ebbed and flowed. I had the better of the opening and got a pawn up before John bounced back with a tactic to make material level. However, he missed a forced piece win, and we went level into a pawn endgame when a draw was agreed. Despite assertions from spectators that I had a forced win with perfect play, Fritz confirms a draw was the correct outcome!
Derek faced an Alekhine which he handled admirably, and went level into a Knight and same Bishop endgame with perhaps Derek having a space advantage because of his pawns on the Queen side tipping it his way. However with no obvious way forward for either side a draw was offered and agreed.
