Rochester v Hastings 2 February (two matches)
Played at Warren Wood Community Centre, Rochester
STOP PRESS-Breaking News Mel Young wins 2 games on the bounce as does Tim Spanton.
This was a 'home' and away fixture to cut down on travel costs and our 'carbon footprint'. In other words two matches were played.
Hastings won the toss in the first match so played white on odds. Rochester consequently had white on odds in the second match (not tossed for).
The first match started at 12.00 noon and the second match was brought forward to 3pm instead of 3.30pm by mutual consent of captains after lunch (a wonderful shepherds Pie-no pastry-) A great venue in a community centre with bar. Tea and coffee with biscuits were easily accessible by all.
First Match: Rochester v Hastings
1. 162 James Robinson 0-1 Paul Kelly 174
2. 136 Paul Foster 0-1 Mel Young 162
3. 141 Chris Marshall 0.5-0.5 James Wheeler 162
4. 132 David Lettington 0-1 Tim Spanton 156
5. 123 Gary Clifford 0-1 Daniel Gibbs 143
6. 110 Tyrone Jeffries 1-0 Helen Evans 131
Ave 134 = 804/6 Result 1.5-4.5 Ave 154.66r = 928/6
My opponent blundered a piece for a central pawn. Helen lost by panicking over the quick time control 35 moves in 1.15h and 15min QP finish.
Second Match Hastings v Rochester
1. 174 Paul Kelly 1-0 James Robinson 162
2. 162 Mel Young 1-0 Keith Hyde 168
3. 162 James Wheeler 1-0 Chris Marshall 141
4. 156 Tim Spanton 1-0 Paul Foster 136
5. 143 Daniel Gibbs 0-1 David Lettington 132
6. 131 Helen Evans 1-0 Tyrone Jeffries 110
Ave 154.66r = 928/6 Result 5-1 Ave 141.5 = 849/6
My opponent allowed me to sink a knight on d3 supported by 2 pawns. Mel finished with a family fork after his queen escaped one fork to fall into another. Helen was advised to play at her own tempo and comfortably won being first to finish.
Jim, Mel and myself celebrated by stopping at a pub in Robertbridge.
