Hastings 2 v Brighton & Hove 2
Although this match against the league's bottom side was one that we really needed to win, it became clear that things would not be straightforward when after a couple of hours play all the games still looked to be fairly level. Jim on board 5 was the first to finish when he agreed a draw in a game which had been fairly level throughout. Andrew on board 3 was next to finish and won nicely by outplaying his opponent in the late middle game. Bernard on board 1 had a slightly difficult position and eventually had to resign after having missed a possible resource when running rather short of time around move 30 . Ollie on board 4 had a fluctuating game in which he seemed to slightly misplay the opening then won a pawn which he subsequently lost to a tactic before the time control. The adjourned position was unbalanced but level so, having looked at the position at home, we accepted his opponents draw offer. The match was therefore tied a 2 - 2 with Alan's game on board 2 to decide the match. In the adjourned position Alan was a pawn up in a rook and pawn ending, a pawn advantage that he had nursed for some 20 moves. The position looked very promising although not entirely clear but home analysis showed it to be winning without the need for adjudication. The final result was thus a much needed 3 -2 win .... well done everyone!
