Horsham 2 v Hastings 2 Tuesday 23rd April
Firstly my thanks to Gary and Ollie who agreed to play when yet again I was struggling to get a full team for an away match and to Jim Wheeler who agreed to drive (unfortunately I have the issue that my car is only a 4 seater).
The match started well when I won the toss and we all obtained level or slightly advantageous positions.
Jim Wheeler with black on board 4 stood well but quite sensibly agreed to a repetition rather than risk over-pressing.
Gary Willson with white on board 5 obtained a very promising position despite being heavily out-graded. Although his position deteriorated he kept a considerable advantage on the clock and his opponent decided to accept his draw offer when much better but very short of time.
Three games were unfinished at the conclusion of the playing session. With white on board 1 Alan Barton played a very controlled game and continued to squeeze a microscopic advantage. With his opponent to move, the game was adjourned in a rook and pawn ending which looked very promising for Alan but which the Nalimov tablebase subsequently showed to be drawn. Unfortunately, although there were a whole host of plausible options which were losing moves there was one move sufficient for the draw.
On board 2 I played black and managed to equalise in a very complex Dutch Defence. My draw offer was declined due to our apparent advantage on other boards but my opponent misplayed the position and I obtained an overwhelming position. I played a move which would have been simply winning had swapped bishops first but which allowed him to swap bishops instead and neutralise all my treats. My position was still fine but I could not believe what I had done and proceeded to get short of time, played terribly, and ended up with a lost position at the adjournment ....unacceptable!!
On board 3 Ollie Willson appeared to get a big advantage with white in a queen's pawn opening but allowed his opponent to obtain lots of counter-play and eventually lost a pawn. Ollie is claiming a draw on adjudication in a position where he is still a pawn down in a rook and opposite coloured bishop ending. His position looks to be very difficult but he may have just enough for the draw.
So a match which started out so well ended up in miserable defeat. To add insult to injury we then had a nightmare journey home thanks to quite thick fog and the A27 being closed. I understand that Gary and Ollie eventually got home at about ten past one in the morning .... I can't imagine why people are reluctant to play in away matches!
