HASTINGS & ST. LEONARDS D team 4½ v WORTHING D team ½ Tuesday 22 October 2013 An excellent start to the MSCL division 4 season by a newly-formed squad who convincingly overcame opposition who they outgraded on all boards, significantly so on the lower boards. Mason WOODHAMS (129)(b) 1-0 Wallis (120), Ken LUCAS (126) ½-½ Crompton (112), Jeremy HUDSON (121) 1-0 Trinkworth (u/g), Keith HOSSACK (122) 1-0 Haworth (71), Greg CHANDLER (82) 1-0 Cox (63). We were never in any danger of losing the match, and it soon became clear that it was just about the margin of victory. Jeremy Hudson was first to finish: he already had an advantage when his opponent launched an impetuous sacrificial attack that failed. After that, no contest. Keith Hossack was next to bring home the spoils. Calm and considered pressure earned him a pawn, and good technique produced breakthrough. Ken Lucas seemed to have the game under control, gaining a pawn, but oversight left him in some difficulty a pawn down. He was however able to simplify to an opposite-coloured bishop and pawn ending, drawn. Greg Chandler delivered the mathematical coup de grace. Greg's performance was particularly encouraging as he played slow and steady, quite unlike the blitzing impetuosity he sometimes shows. His games are often hairy but here he won material with a nice tactic and mopped up very capably. Finally Mason ended the match after 2hrs 43m. He had messed up his opponent's pawn structure early on, later won a pawn, and better technique and strong pressure delivered the full point. Paul Buswell
