Kent League
Rainham v Hastings 1 December 2013
Match drawn 3-3
Hastings won the toss and chose White on odd boards.
Time control: 36 moves in 90 minutes each, followed by a 15 minute quick play finish.
Board 1: John struggled valiantly against FM Taylor and was equal for most of the game. However, the Rainham master just kept grinding and eventually won a King and pawn ending.
Board 2: Ollie played the Modern Benoni, temporarily giving up a pawn for activity. The Rainham man allowed a piece to become trapped and that was all the Hastings junior needed. A flawless demonstration of endgame technique soon brought the win.
Board 3: Once again, Bob "Bully" Elliston was way too much for his opponent. Storming his pawns against passive play and winning a piece, a rapid win soon followed. Game of the day.
Board 4: Ray fell foul of the Maroczy Bind, engineered via a tricky move order. A deft simplification left an obviously drawn Rook and pawn ending.
Board 5: Jim was a pawn up and better for most of the game, however, the transition from middle-game to endgame was not optimal, leaving a drawn looking opposite coloured Bishop ending.
Board 6: Gary misplayed the opening and got carved up by a very sharp opponent.
In the context of the League, a drawn match is a very agreeable result.
Hastings still top the group by some margin.
