Hastings & St Leonards 1 v Horsham 1
Thursday 9 January 2014
This was a match where in most games white seemed to gain a significant advantage, particularly so on the top three boards.
On board 2 Francis obtained a very comfortable position but even so it did not look as though he would win quite as quickly as he did. After a couple of seemingly minor inaccuracies his opponent suddenly found that he was going to lose significant material in order to prevent his queen being trapped.
On board 1 John never quite seemed to equalise and his opponents powerful play gave him a strong passed pawn which resulted in the win of material and a winning endgame.
The situation was similar on board 3 where Alfredo's opponent kept a nagging edge and eventually won a pawn and then a second. There was some confusion towards the end of the game where in time trouble Alfredo thought that there might have been a threefold repetition but he resigned once it had been confirmed that the position had only been repeated twice.
On board 5 Ollie obtained an interesting position but was probably slightly worse after having to avoid what looked like a very strong Greek Gift possibility for his opponent. He subsequently played well and held the balance but, despite the match situation, had little option but to agree to his opponent's draw offer.
Finally on board 5 Jerry obtained what looked to be a very promising position from his Bird's opening. Unfortunately there were tactical problems with a loose bishop and his opponent first regained a pawn and then went a pawn ahead. Jerry did well to hold his position together and ended up a pawn down at the adjournment. He is clearly worse but with very reasonable chances of obtaining a draw.
Unfortunately this means that we will lose the match with a 2 - 3 score at best.
