Hastings & St Leonards 1 v Crowborough 1 (13-03-2014)
Francis Rayner (199) 0.5 - 0.5 Gareth Anthony (200) (W)
John Sugden (183) 0 - 1 Peter Kemp (198)
Alfredo Luaces (181) 0 - 1 Robert Elliston (182)
Ollie Willson (183) 1 - 0 David Fryer (160)
Jerry Anstead (170) 1 - 0 Matthew Pannett (101)
2.5 - 2.5
This was a match that we really needed to win in order to keep the pressure on Brighton & Hove 1, the favourites to win the league, who we play in our final match. The match didn't get off to the best of starts for us when John misplayed the white side of a sharp Dutch Defence. His position was only slightly worse but, as we learned later, his opponent was fully familiar with the position having already played a number of games in the line. John fought hard but was eventually ground down in a tricky bishop and pawn ending. Alfredo also seemed to get a poor position out of the opening with little space and no counter play. Again he fought hard but it was very difficult to coordinate his pieces and he also lost .... most inconsiderate of Bob Elliston to play such a good game and win against his other club! By this time Francis's game had been agreed drawn, when a theoretical line resulted in a fairly level position, meaning we needed to win the two remaining games just to draw the match. Ollie obtained a nice space advantage and eventually won a piece. Although almost certainly winning the position was still quite tricky as his pieces were slightly uncoordinated. Ollie managed to consolidate his position, winning another piece in the process, so his opponent resigned once the time control had been reached. Jerry was playing a last minute recruit from the Crowborough 4th team who played very well considering his low grade. Jerry however gained an advantage which eventually resulted in the win of the exchange which was sufficient to ensure a clearly winning position at the adjournment. So the match ended in a fair 2.5 - 2.5 draw which, although not quite what we were looking for, could still keep us in the hunt for the league title if Brighton & Hove 1 fail to overcome Horsham in their penultimate match next Thursday.
