On Wednesday Hastings 2 played Lewes 1 and recorded a narrow 2-3 defeat in a slightly strange match. On board 4 Steve Blewitt drew very quickly with black and this was soon followed by another draw on board 2 where Alfredo Luaces, also with black, forced a threefold repetition. Sometime later, Bernard Cafferty on board 3 accepted his opponents draw offer after having appeared to be under slight pressure at one stage. This left Allan Barton on Board 1 and Jim Wheeler on board 5 still playing. Jim possibly missed the chance to gain the advantage on the queenside and the position was level when his opponent initiated some interesting tactics. Both sides probably missed chances in a tricky position and Jim accepted a draw in an unclear position where, although a pawn down, any result was still possible. Alan has already recorded two fine draws this season against 200+ opposition but on this occasion perhaps missed the opportunity to create a strong knight outpost and fell to a fierce attack by his 210 opponent which eventually resulted in a won bishop and pawn ending.
