The club’s recent poor record in the Sussex County KO McArthur Cup continued when a representative team lost 2.5-3.5 to St Francis & Haywards Heath, this afternoon, 10th February. Our strength in depth was trumped by a fine score by the visitors on the top three boards.
Time limit: 35 in 75” and 30” to complete. The visitors won the toss.
F Rayner 0-1 F Kwiatkowski (Wh)
J Sudgden 0-1 R Fitzgerald
R Almond 0-1 J Boardman
Rasa N 1-0 V Cole (captain)
R Elliston DRAW M Faulkner
Paul Kelly 1-0 N Fitzgerald
2.5 – 3.5
Paul Kelly continued his long winning run of the last month or so by exchanging Black’s Bg7 in a Closed Sicilia and then exploiting the resulting hole at f6 by Nc3-d5. At one stage he was 50 minutes up on the clock! Bob Elliston had a quiet draw. Rasa was looking good, as she was in an opening line from long ago, viz Reti-Bogojubow, New York 1924, a Brilliancy Prize game. Her exploitation of a pawn plus was efficient and forced concessions, so that she won Q for N by a discovered attack, forcing instant resignation.
Then disaster struck. John lost a pawn to a clever tactic which also exchanged queens, so he had no chance to complicate matters. It was in an uphill struggle thereafter against the promising teenager Robert Fitzgerald. Even worse, Francis lost his Q in only 19 moves. A closed Ruy Lopez looked sedate, but Black was cramped and when he played his Q round to g6 via f6 he was shocked when an unexpected move trapped his good lady. The relevant parts of the construction of the mouse trap by White was Pe4,d5, Re1, Nh5 and then Nf3-h4.
Richard had a fascinating game in which he balanced on the edge for some time in view of his K being at e7 rather than the ideal square g7. White forced a passed d-pawn and the writing was on the wall by move 26 or so, although the game actually lasted another twenty-odd moves.
Non-playing captain, Bernard Cafferty
