Monday 18th Feb, HSL 3rd Team away to division 2 leaders Worthing 2. Summary: a probable 3.5 to 1.5 loss.
Bd 1 Morgan Blake (161) v Ollie Willson (161) 1 - 0
Bd 2 R Nair (156) v Steve Blewitt (161) 0.5 - 0.5
Bd 3 T Edmondson (155) v Omer Namouk (140) 1 - 0
Bd 4 D Banks (147) v Derek Cosens (130) A - A (probable 0 - 1)
Bd 5 A Graham (141) v Gary Willson (111) 1 - 0
One of our longer trips (in part because we got lost on the way!) saw us out-graded (Jan 2013 grades) by and average of 152 to 141. We unfortunately lost the toss and they chose white on odd boards.
Bd1 Ollie was playing his Sussex Junior friend Morgan. Morgan played a very attacking line against Ollie's Sicilian; all was fine until under a little pressure Ollie castled in real trouble, and there was no coming back.
Bd2 Steve wheeled out his Bird, and his opponent was its equal being fairly level throughout the game. With possible chances for a win, Steve was offered a draw when the overall match was irretrievable, and so wisely took it.
Bd3 Omer was in trouble from early with a dominant White bishop on the 6th rank cramping his position throughout the game. Despite trying to make a number of counter attacking chances his opponent damped them down and eventually took the win.
Bd4 Derek was in real trouble from the outset, getting caught in traffic and arriving 30 mins after the clock was started. But it was the only trouble he had, quickly gaining a dominant position from a Ruy Lopez. When the game was a adjourned, Derek was a piece up with no obvious way for his opponent to make any progress and plenty of weaknesses for Derek to probe. Whilst it was adjourned, Fritz gives it as +6 in our favour, so a concession whilst awaited is likely.
Bd 5 I gave up a pawn in the middlegame for piece activity and a bishop pair, but with no real weakness to shoot at, I was gradually whittled down to a Knight v Bishop end game a pawn down. I could not see a way forward when we adjourned, and Fritz confirms +3 in my opponents favour, so I have resigned.
Expected results is 3.5 to 1.5 in their favour, but all in all, it was perhaps a closer result against the likely division winners than it may otherwise have been.
