Hastings 2 v St Francis HH 2.00 pm Sunday 30th April
First to finish was Jim Wheeler with black on board 5 who possibly missed a couple of opportunities to achieve an edge but still gained a creditable draw.
Next to finish was Ray Brooks on board 3 who played convincingly to score a fine win on the black side of a sharp Sicilian.
Again, this left three games unfinished at the conclusion of the playing session, the results of which still have to be agreed but which appear to be fairly clear cut. Mel Young with white on board 4 looked to have a promising position from the opening but went awry later on and is losing a double rook and pawn ending.
Alan Barton with white on board 2 played a fine game to deny his opponent any real activity and eventually won two pieces for a rook with a winning position.
Finally, on board 1 Bernard Cafferty had the unenviable task of playing black against Feliks Kwiatkowski but managed to achieve a sharp but very playable position with the kings castled on opposite sides. Unfortunately Bernard made a mistake late in the middle game and ended a pawn down with a losing position.
If the outstanding games go as anticipated the match will be drawn which will be a fine result for us against a strong team.

Depending on the outstanding games and the result of the match between Crowborough 1 and Brighton & Hove 1 we will finish the season in 8th or 9th position out of the 12 teams. This means that we will comfortably avoid relegation if the leagues remain as they are currently but that we will be relegated if they decide to go from three to four divisions and in the process relegate 5 teams from division 1.
This is a fine result putting us top of the 2nd teams and above at least one 1st team. Realistically it was unlikely that we would finish much higher and avoid the threat of relegation if the restructure does take place, particularly bearing in mind how difficult I have found getting players for away matches.
Finally I would like to thank everyone who has played this season especially Alan Barton who has played every game on either boards 1 or 2. Also my special thanks to all those who have driven to away matches.
