Mid-Sussex League Division 1
Hastings & St Leonards 2 v Hastings & St Leonards 1
Tuesday 15 October 2013
Although the 1st team eventually won 3.5 - 1.5 the match was hard fought and the second team should take great credit in achieving some fine results against strong opposition.
On board 5, in a difficult position, Gary made a mistake on the black side of a Leningrad Dutch. By entering complications to avoid the loss of an exchange he instead lost a piece and Bernard mopped up neatly.
On board 3 Alfredo produced some nice tactics, won an exchange, and then mated Dan in short order.
On board 2 Mel, on the white side of a Fantasy Caro Kan, gave up his b pawn for a big lead in development. John probably left his Queen on b2 for rather too long and it could longer retreat to safety. However, although it could be attacked and could not escape, the Queen had just sufficient squares and a perpetual resulted.
On board 1 Ollie and Francis agreed a draw in a sharp Sicilian. Francis thought that he might be a bit better but the final position was double edged and the result gave the 1st team the match.
Finally on board 4 Jerry was somewhat surprised by Derek's 2 Ne2 in another Caro Kan and proceeded to get a rather cramped position. Although he managed to solve his difficulties, and in fact had a winning position at one point, he went wrong in time trouble and adjourned a pawn down in a rook and pawn ending. It was not entirely clear whether the adjourned position was a draw or a win for Derek but after much computer, and some human, analysis a draw was agreed.
